Why I Created the Facebook Farewell Formula

When I first became a social media trainer and consultant, I never imagined I'd be asked for help with something so deeply emotional.

One day, I received a message on Facebook from a woman I didn’t know. She told me she was the sister of a man I was connected to on Facebook—he had passed away unexpectedly. She was grieving and desperate to post a final message on his page to let his friends know and give them a space to share memories. But she didn’t have his password and didn’t know what to do.

At the time, Facebook hadn’t introduced Legacy Contacts, and memorialized accounts weren’t available until a few months after our conversation. I did my best to guide her—I told her how to report his profile to Facebook. But even now, years later, his account remains untouched, frozen in time. No message. No tribute. No sign that he had passed.

That moment never left me.

Recently, I learned that someone I know lost both their child and, shortly after, their spouse. It broke my heart when I learned about their loss. I wanted so badly to reach out and offer help, at least to show them how to memorialize the Facebook pages of their loved ones. But I also knew that Facebook was probably the last thing on their minds. I am sure they are living with unimaginable grief.

That’s when the idea for this guide came to me.
